Knit Out + Yarn Harlot = Fun!

So I headed down to the Knit Out with Mia and Gwen (both blogless) today. It was an experiment of knitters behavior when tempted with free things very interesting. I've never seen so many people pushing and shoving just to get a goody bag from Red Heart! Let me tell ya, those grannies can be vicious! It's amazing what a bit of free yarn, needles, magazines and literature can do to otherwise sane knitters. Wait, check that, are we ever sane?

Here's a look at the crowd:

The fashion show was cute - at least the dogs and kids. These models were so darn cute! The one in the pink skirt was shakn' those hips like a professional! Absolutely adorable!

The women's clothing was well, kinda scary. There were a few nice pieces, but the majority didn't really strike my fancy. There was a very nice bag and belt made out of Patons and a nice peplum cardigan made out of Lion Brand Cashmere something or other. There was also an awesome coat made out of Koigu, but the Yarn Harlot pointed that out (she was the co-MC) and the announcer didn't really push that too much (I believe this is mainly a Patons, Red Heart, Lion Brand sponsored event). I don't know why I didn't take pics of what I liked, I think I was just too blinded by the fluorescent scarf and shawl.

After the Knit Out, I ventured uptown to meet the Yarn Harlot at Knitty City. It was a fairly small group and was a pretty informal Q&A session instead of the usual reading. She was so nice and very funny. It was nice just knitting away and having a chat as a group.

Afterwards, she graciously signed our books and participated in photographs. Here I am holding the stash weasel and of course Stephanie has the famous traveling sock.

Overall, it was a great day. It was a little hot and I got a bit sunburnt, but it was worth it!

I love the new banner! I would have thought knitters would be of the peaceful sort. I guess when you mix people with needles with freebies, things can get hectic!

i'd gone to the knit-out for the past two years and just couldn't deal again. the first time, i got a lotta free patterns but last year was a zoo! sorry i missed the harlot, tho

Sounds like you had a pretty great day. As suspected, my mind and body were neither willing nor able to make it downtown (or outside for that matter). Shame I managed to miss the free Red Heart(?!)

Sounds like you guys had fun. Although to be honest, knitting with the Harlot at Knitty City sounds like much more fun than the Knit Out itself. Sorry I missed it. Love the photo of you and the Harlot. Dude, I can't believe you touched the Weasel. So cool!

okay, before anyone goes running thinking they might get a free ball of... well, anything useful: the free yarn was one ball of bernat boa. which is fun (or something like fun) and still free, but not exactly worth the elbowing. and the patterns are the tear-offs from the choose-your-big-box-chain craft store. so don't go for the free stuff. go for the chihuahua dressed up like sponge bob. :) and more time with knittery friends, since there never is enough!
and M - I can't believe you left the house again! but sounds worth it...

Sorry I missed you guys -- I drove up from Philly that afternoon and didn't get to Union Square until 3pm.

I'm glad I missed the free-yarn frenzy -- people were bad enough about the [mostly ugly] free patterns!

UGH! Last year I got run over three times by the same grandmother in a wheelchair. I think the others all sharpened their elbows for the occasion.

I was glad to miss the Knit Out, but BUMMED to miss Stephanie! I had a softball game that day.
